Workplace Reading Series

This three-part series moves beyond just teaching students to read. It teaches students how to learn and apply their new skills directly to their work. Students learn to interpret what they are reading and to think critically. Deductive reasoning is stressed to help in preparing them for an in-depth study of industrial skills. Students also learn how to use important reference materials.

Part 1 of the Workplace Reading Video Series

• Reading in a work environment
• Interpreting symbols in the dictionary
• Recognizing parts of a word: prefix, root, and suffix
• Reading illustrations
• Understanding paragraphs, topics and topic sentences
• Locating the main idea in a sentence and paragraph
• Using visual cues to locate the main idea

Part 2 of the Workplace Reading Video Series

• Using classification
• Understanding how to use comparison
• Identify an extended analogy
• Recognition of cause and effect relationships
• Understanding what interference means
• Making logical conclusions
• Making judgments based on information found in a paragraph
